QR ticket check-in: running a fast, clean gate
How QR ticket verification works, how to staff a gate so the queue keeps moving, and what to do when a code has already been used.
What a QR ticket actually is
When a ticket payment is confirmed, the buyer receives a ticket carrying a unique code, shown as a QR image and as text they can read out. The code is not the ticket type or the buyer's name — it is a one-time reference the platform recognises.
At the gate, your team looks that code up. The response says whether it is valid, which ticket type it is, and whether it has already been used.
Checking guests in
Open the verification page on a phone, scan the guest's QR code or type the reference, and admit them when it shows as valid. The check-in is recorded immediately, so a second attempt with the same code is flagged — which is exactly how screenshot-sharing gets caught.
Staffing a gate that keeps moving
- Two verifiers minimum, and a third for a crowd over about 300
- One supervisor away from the queue to handle disputed or used codes
- Charged phones and a power bank — verification is a browser page, so battery is the real risk
- A test ticket verified the day before, so nobody is learning the flow at 8pm
- A printed fallback list of ticket references in case the venue's data is unusable
When a code has already been used
Usually it is innocent: a buyer bought several tickets and the group is showing the same screenshot. Move them aside, check the purchase record for how many tickets were bought under that number, and admit the number actually paid for. Keep this off the main queue — one argument at the front of a line costs you ten minutes.
